23RD NEW YORK ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES ROUSING SLATE OF AWARD WINNERS FOLLOWING ITS RECORD-BREAKING RUN

The 23rd edition of the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) wrapped up a blockbuster 17-day run on July 28, following stage appearances by 130 acclaimed filmmakers, international stars and other notable guests from across Asia and the Asian diaspora, and screenings of over 90 films from July 12 to 28 at Film at Lincoln Center (FLC) and the SVA Theatre, with additional screenings at LOOK Cinemas W57, and special presentations at the Korean Cultural Center New York.

This year’s epic NYAFF featured new and classic titles from China, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Mongolia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and beyond, with nine world premieres, 12 international premieres, and 38 North American premieres. A record one-third of the screenings were sold out.

New York, NY (June 18, 2024) – The New York Asian Film Foundation and Film at Lincoln Center (FLC) have announced the second round of programming and award honorees for the 23rd edition of the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), taking place July 12–22 at FLC, and from July 22–28 at the SVA Theatre, with special weekend screenings and one-night-only programming from July 13–15, 18–21, and 23–25 at LOOK Cinemas W57, as well as a special collaborative presentation of hit films at the Korean Cultural Center New York on July 13–27.

The 22nd edition of the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) ended another epic 17-day run on Sunday night, with stage appearances by over 100 acclaimed filmmakers, international stars and other notable guests from across Asia and the Asian diaspora, screenings of over 70 films at Film at Lincoln Center (FLC), Barrymore Film Center and Look Cinemas from July 14 – 30, with many shows sold out and the highest festival attendance on record.

The lineup included eight world premieres, nine international premieres, 32 North American premieres, three U.S. premieres, and 16 East Coast/New York premieres, showcasing the most exciting new action, comedy, drama, thriller, romance, horror, and art-house films from Hong Kong, Japan, China, South Korea, the Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Singapore, Vietnam, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

NYAFF sets 'The Monkey King' as closing film in first collaboration with Netflix

Netflix animation The Monkey King has been set as the closing film of the 22nd New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), marking the first time the festival has partnered with the streaming giant.

The special screening will take place on July 30, more than two weeks before the August 18 premiere on Netflix worldwide. It will be attended by Netflix Animation producer Peilin Chou, a former Oriental Dreamworks executive who produced Abominable and was Oscar-nominated for Over The Moon.

The feature is directed by Anthony Stacchi, who was nominated for an Oscar in 2015 for co-directing The Boxtrolls, and has a voice cast that includes Jimmy O. Yang, Bowen Yang, Jo Koy, Stephanie Hsu and BD Wong. Executive producer is Stephen Chow (Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer), with animation and imagery by Reel FX.

New York Asian Film Festival 2023 reveals first titles, Ryohei Suzuki named Rising Star

The New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) has unveiled the first wave of features for its 22nd edition and announced that Japanese actor Ryohei Suzuki will receive the Screen International Rising Star award.

NYAFF will run from July 14-30 at the city’s Film at Lincoln Center, with a programme of more than 60 titles, and Suzuki will be presented with the award recognising emerging talent from East Asia on July 15.

Suzuki has been acting on screen for more than 15 years, with a string of roles in Japanese TV series such as historical drama Segodon, Ship of Theseus and Tokyo MER: Mobile Emergency Room. But he has been gaining increased attention for his big screen roles in films such as Last Of The Wolves, for which he won best supporting actor at last year’s Japanese Academy Awards.

Louis Koo to receive Screen’s Extraordinary Star Asia Award at NYAFF

Acclaimed Hong Kong star and producer Louis Koo is set to receive the highest honour bestowed by the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) next month.

Koo will receive the Extraordinary Star Asia Award for Exceptional Contribution to Asian Cinema at New York’s Film at Lincoln Center on July 19.

As one of Hong Kong’s biggest stars, Koo has more than 100 credits to his name including sci-fi action thriller Warriors Of Future, which became the highest-grossing Asian film of all time in the territory following its release last August.
