Eternal Summer

盛夏光年

Leste Chen's final Taiwan production is a raw, emotionally powerful, and searingly honest drama about friendship, longing and loss. It presents a different side to his directing talents than seen in his China-produced high-concept thrillers and romantic comedies. Straight-A student Jonathan is forced by his junior high-school teacher to befriend rebellious underachiever Shane. But instead of raising Shane's scores, Jonathan's own academic achievements tumble. Ten years later, their friendship is tested by the return of former classmate Carrie. Shane starts secretly dating her, only to have doubts about his sexuality confirmed in a failed love hotel tryst. When Jonathan makes his own quiet move on Carrie, she promises to be his girlfriend if he secures her grades to the university entrance exam. This transference of responsibility is deftly reflected by the recombination of their love triangle, creating waves of sexual confusion and self-destruction, bursting with moments of devastatingly brutal honesty.
