Saving Sally

More than a decade in stop-and-start production, the very existence of Saving Sally is a miraculous fairy tale of its own. This wildly creative mix of live action and animation centers around a geeky wannabe comic book artist called Marty and his hopeless crush on the beautiful and spunky inventor Sally. They first meet in high school when Sally uses her quirky gadgets to rescue Marty from bullies. But they never become more than best friends and his romantic fantasies are crushed when he becomes the enabler of her douchebag of a boyfriend with whom she leaves childhood things behind. Meanwhile, the bruises she tries to hide hint to domestic abuse at the hands of her monstrous parents. Years later, they reconnect after Marty successfully pitches a comic to a publisher about an astronomer dedicated to saving a girl imprisoned by aliens, an artistic manifestation of his complicated relationship with Sally.
