This darkly electric debut, shot with breathtaking brio on the mean backstreets of Ho Chi Minh City, follows 14-year-old Ròm, a lottery ticket runner who earns commissions only when he picks the lucky numbers for his neighborhood’s debt-ridden slum dwellers. Abandoned by his parents, Rom knows how to fend for himself. But he finds his livelihood in danger when Phúc makes a move on his territory, skimming clients’ winnings and eventually forcing a violent showdown. Reminiscent of Slumdog Millionaire in its themes, social conscience and sheer energy, with more running than a Sabu film.
