One kid kills another kid in cold blood. The victim’s mother remembers her sweet son striving to break out of their lower class strata. The perpetrator on the other hand is entitled and vicious, motivated by petty jealousy over a girl. His rich bitch mom’s moneyed lawyers will likely set him free. The subsequent media frenzy spawns an enraged public. Yet before you can say Rashomon, gnawing clues reveal a multifaceted underbelly to this shocking tale. Layla Zhuqing Ji’s accomplished, breathtaking feature debut is a bloodthirsty knife to the gut of duplicity, tyranny and blind conformity.
