Two of Asia’s greatest actresses of all time, Maggie Cheung and Brigitte Lin (who famously took an arrow in the eye during the shoot), play badass swordswomen who attempt to thwart Ming Dynasty eunuch Tsao (played by Donnie Yen in full supervillain form) as he masterminds a plot to take over the Empire. One of the first Hong Kong films to be shot in China, co-writer/producer Tsui Hark’s swordplay extravaganza is the gold standard of 1990s wuxia. After this madcap blend of female-powered gravity-defying acrobatics and spaghetti-western tropes, it’s no surprise that both Cheung and Lin have since retired from the big screen.
