jigoku-no-hanazono: Office Royale
A movie that gives a much-needed boost to corporate feminism, Office Royale also taps into the fantastical magic of the manga universe, yet it’s NOT an adaptation! Comic-genius screenwriter Bakarhythm and dynamic director Kazuaki Seki have joined forces to create a no-holds-barred send-up of the patriarchy and other outdated social conventions, taking no prisoners in their obliteration of the old guard. A top-notch cast brings subversive dreams of unbridled empowerment to life with furious glee. Machismo-laden gangster-movie tropes are reconstructed in the service of long-overdue office emancipation, turning the concept of professionally stagnant OL (“office ladies”) on its proverbial head. Consistently self-referential, violently hilarious, and hilariously violent, this is a surprising showstopper. The pure and puerile entertainment on display is imbued with a complex brain and urgent social commentary, not to mention one hell of a sucker punch.
