Korean and Japanese dysfunctional-family dramedies and their respective idiosyncrasies merge in this funny and touching road movie. A charming would-be shyster lures his younger brother, with an 8-year-old son in tow, to South Korea with the promise of a lucrative venture. Soon they’re out of luck on a train to nowhere, only to encounter three siblings with crises of their own. Makeshift family bonds form as the ragtag group come to terms with various demons on their shared adventure. Director Ishii blends sentimentality and absurdity into a surprisingly effective salve of laughter and catharsis.
